Costa Rica's San International Airport is a fully functioning international airport with advanced and traveler friendly systems for customs and security. Direct flights from ten major U.S. cities with three to five hour flight times make Costa Rica easily accessible. There are many smaller airfields that allow for domestic air travel. Domestic flights are usually $75-$100 each way. (higher during December to April)
In general, the Domestic Airline Policies are:
- Infants and children up to the age of 2 fly for free.
- 25 lbs per person for all baggage
- Extra luggage carries an additional charge (call ahead for these reasons)
-Some airlines have surfboard allowances
-Prices vary
-Some do not have room for anything oversized
It is more expensive, but relatively reasonable to charter a plane for a small group or family. Flexible scheduling and freedom is a great advantage for many tourists who wish to take advantage of all that Costa Rica has to offer.
