Welcome to the Costa Rica Visitor Center - Casinos

Costa Rica has a variety of nightlife activities and a great number of Casinos around the country from which to choose. Try your luck at our legal gambling. Step up to the slots or card tables and play caribbean stud poker, mini bacarat, blackjack, canasta roulette, craps, rows of slot machines and video machines. Casinos are all over Costa Rica, in San Jose and resorts throughout the country.

Casinos
Almost all of the hot tourist destinations have several casinos. Typically they are part of hotels; unlike in the U.S., there are very few large Atlantic City or Vegas style Casinos or large poker rooms. Casinos are relatively informal places with minimum bets typically at 500 Colones.  The most popular Casino game is 21 or Rummy.  Its concept is derived from blackjack but of course there are some Tico rules. You get two cards, you can take another card or stay in the spirit of trying to achieve 21.  Just like blackjack, the goal is to get as close to 21 as possible without going over.  Here is where the game begins to separate itself from the Las Vegas version: if your first three cards are the same, three of a kind, or a straight (6, 7, & 8 of the same suit), you have a ‘rummy’ and you are paid

double.  If your three of a kind happen to be three sevens (which is 21), you win a larger jackpot bonus.  If you get 21 with two cards or get five cards without breaking 21, there’s no double bonus as you get in many other international casinos.  Splitting pairs is allowed as is doubling down.  Some of the other games include roulette, where the numbers are drawn from a lottery tumbler rather than spun on a roulette wheel.  There are also electric slot machines; however most are different than the Las Vegas style. There are also other, uniquely Tico card games you will need to learn before you can play.  Many of these games have the best odds at the casino!
